The Yippies was a New Left organisation, albeit loosely organised, that flourished in the late 1960s and early 1970s, mainly in the USA where it was founded.
On December 31, 1967 at the New York loft of Abbie Hoffman (1936 - 1989), activists resolved to hold a Festival of Life during the 1968 Democratic Party Chicago Convention, or 'Convention of Death' as many radicals named it.
They decided to call a new party the Youth International Party and thus call themselves 'Yippies', a name coined by Paul Krassner. The originators of Yippie (the Chicago 8, later the Chicago 7) included Hoffman, Rennie Davis, Jerry Rubin, John Froines, David Dellinger, Lee Weiner, Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale. Seale, a co-founder in 1966 of the Black Panther Party, was excluded from YIP later.
